TMJ and TMD
TMJ Treatment Burlington WA
Surprisingly, migraines affect almost a fourth of U.S. households. While headaches, neck pain, and jaw pain can stem from several sources, TMD is often overlooked as a regular cause. TMD most frequently occurs when a misaligned bite strains the jaw joint (TMJ) and surrounding muscles. At Gentle Dentistry™ in Mt Vernon WA, your physical and emotional comfort is our priority, along with a focus on the highest quality dental care. By coming in for a consultation, we will find a TMJ treatment that will permanently ease your pain.
What is Your TMJ or TMD?
Your TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is one of the most important and frequently used joints in your entire body. Located right in front of each ear, your TMJ connects your jawbone with your skull. Without this joint, you would not be able to eat, talk, or even open your mouth.
TMD, or TMJ Disorder, most frequently occurs with an imbalanced bite. When your teeth don't come together properly, your jawbone is pulled away from the socket and the surrounding muscles strain to compensate for the misalignment. Over time this constant straining wears away at the TMJ and tension mounts in the muscles and nerves. Headaches, neck pain, and jaw pain usually result. TMD can also be caused when any type of damage or wear occurs to the TMJ.
TMD is commonly caused from the following:
- Imbalanced bite
- Bruxism (tooth grinding)
- Trauma or injury
- Missing Teeth
What are the Symptoms of TMD?
Migraine and Tension Headaches
Neck Pain and Back Pain
Tinnitus (Ringing Ears)
What are the Options for TMJ Treatment?
While medications may offer temporary pain relief from TMD symptoms, our doctors at Gentle Dentistry in the Everett Washington area provide permanent and comfortable TMJ solutions. At an initial consultation in our dental office in Mt Vernon WA, we will assess the source of your pain. Depending on the cause and severity, we will provide you with TMJ treatment options that will provide long lasting pain relief.
Most often, a personalized dental plan is designed to realign an imbalanced bite. This may include orthodontics or restorative dentistry. Sometimes a special splint is used to move the jaw to its optimal position. Once your TMJ is functioning properly again it allows your surrounding muscles and nerves to relax, reducing tension and pain.
